Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (SolidWorks Expert)
About OM Defence Systems
OMD Defence Systems develops advanced drone and autonomy technologies for defence and security applications. Our mission is to build reliable, intelligent unmanned systems that integrate flight control, real-time communication, and AI-powered decision-making.
We are expanding our R&D team and looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (SolidWorks Expert) to design high-load electromechanical devices.
We are looking for an engineer with an advanced level of SolidWorks proficiency who can rapidly turn ideas into 3D models, work with complex assemblies, and efficiently package electronics within limited volumes.
Key requirement is speed and quality of modelling, with strong command of SolidWorks including hotkeys, macros, and optimised workflows.
Key Responsibilities
You will focus on internal layout, packaging, and mechanical design of complex systems.
- Dense packaging of electronic components, batteries, and power units inside complex-shaped enclosures.
- Finding the optimal balance such as centring and weight distribution at the 3D modelling stage.
- Designing internal cable channels and retainers to ensure clean and precise assembly.
- Rapid prototyping with fast creation of models for 3D printing and CNC machining, including quick adjustments after testing.
- Working with complex surfaces, designing streamlined enclosure parts with consideration for aerodynamics and manufacturability.
- Creating clear production drawings and releasing design documentation aligned with ESKD and ISO standards.
Requirements
You should have advanced experience in mechanical design and SolidWorks.
Skills
- Experience with Surface Modelling is mandatory.
- Ability to work with Large Assemblies without performance loss.
- Proficiency in contextual editing using Top-Down design to link internal layout with the external enclosure.
- Experience in packaging, fitting complex internals into compact enclosures while accounting for cooling, vibration isolation, and ease of assembly.
- Strong manufacturing awareness including milling, composites, moulding, and 3D printing.
Nice to Have
- CSWP or CSWE certifications.
- Experience with PDM systems.
- Ability to use SolidWorks Simulation for basic strength and stress analysis.
What we offer
You will work on high-performance mechanical systems with direct impact on product design and functionality.
- Work on advanced electromechanical systems in an R&D environment.
- Opportunity to design complex products from concept to production.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Competitive compensation.
